Exploring Mount Dora: Countryside and Small Town Charm

Have you ever meant to explore somewhere super close to home but it was just far enough away to seem inconvenient? That was our excuse for waiting this long to take a drive over to Mount Dora. Initially, we had decided to visit a pumpkin patch (..and by we, I mean I decided and my awesome husband agreed to entertain my desire to do all the Fall things) and head right back home to work on some other things on our agenda. Next thing we know, our short little blip of a pumpkin patch turned into a few hours worth of exploring Mount Dora.

Long & Scott Farms, Mount Dora

Located down a long drive of country road, this farm was the cutest! We arrived shortly after they opened and it was packed. Long & Scott Farms offers a Fall pumpkin patch, corn maze, and market with lots of locally grown goodies. We are now the proud new parents of three beautiful pumpkins and a jar of jam!

Downtown Mount Dora

Soon realizing how close we were to Downtown Mount Dora and the fact that we were starving, we decided to stop in and explore the area. We had always heard about how cute and charming the area was, and once we arrived we instantly understood why people love it so much!

We decided to mosey for a bit and then found ourselves in a pub called “The Frog and Monkey”. Good food, great beer selection and friendly associates! After a quick lunch we were able to resume our stroll around the area: we found so many cute little shops, great coffee and tea rooms, and even an entire store dedicated to dogs! Fun fact: open containers are a go here!

Every new place we visit we love to just roam on foot and experience the local aspect of it all. Mount Dora was so warm and welcoming and we are looking forward to going back!

Fixin’ to be a Dixon: Our Wedding

One thing I have been so excited to share about is our wedding! On November 17th, 2018, Jeff and I stood before God, family and friends to celebrate our love and unite as one. Our wedding day was everything I could have hoped for and more: from all of the preparations leading up to the day itself, it was magical.

Our journey to this point was not the easiest for the last 7 months of our engagement. We were going through major life changes with a big move and career changes, ultimately ending up with us moving back to the place that makes us happiest and making MORE changes the week before our wedding! But honestly, I couldn’t be happier we made that move when we did. People continuously ask: “How could you stand to move and change jobs one week before your wedding and not be stressed out of your mind?!” The answer: Jesus and amazing planning, from every level.

Psst: I will include a list of vendors and incredible humans we worked with for our wedding at the end of this blog post! They are also mentioned within the post.

Throughout our planning process, I worked with Solutions Bridal in Orlando to find the perfect dress and veil. They were beyond accommodating! Every woman in this establishment was so knowledgeable, sweet, and had a very keen eye for personal style! Solutions Bridal offered to have a custom veil made for me, using the lace from my dress ordered from the manufacturer and made to my specifications and it turned out to be the most gorgeous and flattering bridal piece! I am blown away at the skills and ability of each of their team members. They were also willing to allow my makeup artist, Jessica Tullas, to come down to do my bridal makeup trial while I was in for a dress fitting. The moment I was able to see the dress and makeup together, the same feelings rushed over me that did when I knew I found THE dress. These ladies made me feel like a million bucks every single time I walked in their boutique, and I give them the highest praises for working with me on so many levels!

Jessica Tullas has done my makeup for two major events in my life now- my NPC Bikini competition and my wedding, and she has SLAYED every time. She is so talented, super fun to be around, and is the hype queen you need when your nerves are frazzled. The fact that she is so versatile in her application makes her my go-to for any big event in my life!

My hair has been colored by one of my best friends now for the last few years, and I recently got NBR extensions last summer in South Tampa by Taylor- she is Bellamie Hair Pro Extension Certified. Together they have made my hair so dreamy and healthy! Building on the foundation these two have laid, I was referred to the kind and talented hairdresser, Emily Urquhart (she does makeup, too!), who was able to take my hair and design the perfect wedding hairstyle- it looked incredible and held all night! I didn’t have to worry about my hair in pictures AT ALL. That’s sayin’ something, especially in a Florida wedding.

My saving grace throughout the planning process was my now sister-in-law, Kayla. Her family owns the wedding venue we got married at- The Delamater House- and she also coordinates weddings in addition to being a teacher. Girl slays it and makes dreams come true, literally. Her company is Belles & Bowties, and her sister Kristen, provided the flowers from her company Flowers at the House. These women took a very simple vision of mine and just made it explode into this beautiful vision I didn’t even KNOW I had for our wedding! They know exactly what they’re doing. The staff is unmatched: professional, friendly, calming, organized, assertive- everything you could want on such a day.

Our photographer was Meagan at Emotive Photo, and she was so sweet and a calming presence which was great, especially right before the wedding and right after when you are just a bundle of nerves and excitement! She was able to capture some amazing moments, and our photos are so enchanting and dreamy. I cry every single time I look through them, literally. What’s more, you would never know that she and her assistant were there! Extremely poised and professional.

Overall, every struggle we had made our day that much sweeter, and the incredible team of people behind us helped to carry out a memory we will cherish forever.

From the bottom of our hearts:

Thank you, thank you, THANK YOU to each and every person that shared our special day with us- behind the scenes or as a guest; it was a dream to have all of our favorite people with us to celebrate an incredibly important moment, and we are blessed to have you in our lives!

Autumn Apple Butter

Having recently vacationed to Boston, my fiancé and I found ourselves lugging 20+ lbs of freshly-picked apples back home in our suitcase. We had gone apple picking in a beautiful rural orchard full of every “Fall” themed thing you could imagine- from rolling hills of various apple trees, to numerous pumpkin patches with vines and vines of pumpkins and gourds, to rows of corn, hay rides, and even a rustic little barn serving apple cider and cider donuts.. this place was heaven.

Our trip was blessed with perfect temperatures: lows in the low 50s and highs around 65-70 F, something us Floridians get to experience for maybe 90 minutes out of the year. According to the city, it was prime-time for apple pickin’, so we went into full basic-white-girl-Floridian-tourist mode and basically threw our money at the best orchard we could find.

The way orchards work, from my understanding, is throughout the apple-picking season, different varieties of apples are available to pick depending on the week. We had three different apple trees to pick from: Spartan, Empire, and Macoun. We took our bag for 1/2 a bushel and got to work- then realized we have to fit these all in our suitcase on the airplane home! After hemming and hawing for a while, I decided to attempt to make some apple butter. As a kid, I used to LIVE for this stuff- as in, slather me in apple butter and roll me in a biscuit for a nap •bye•.

I found some easy crockpot apple butter recipes and decided to go with a highly rated yet incredibly simple one, which I will provide here. Note that I did make a few modifications to taste but like all recipes, it may vary between everyone!

I first started out by washing and rubbing all of the wax off of our apples. We have a ton of them, so it took a little while, but the recipe itself only calls for about 6 apples to supply you with 8 oz. worth of goodness.

Recipe:

6 apples of your choice (you can mix and match- we did!)

1 heaping tablespoon of cinnamon

1/2 lemon squeezed for juice

1/3 tsp vanilla extract

1/4 cup white sugar

1/4 cup brown sugar

1/4 cup water

Directions:

Wash and dry all apples. No need to peel the apples, but you can if you’d like! Core and roughly chop each apple and put into the crockpot.

Add the cinnamon, white sugar, brown sugar, and water.

Cut 1 lemon in half and squeeze the juices over the chopped apples.

Add 1/3 tsp of vanilla extract.

Mix together and set crock pot on “low” for 4 1/2 hours, checking periodically to stir and making sure to add water when needed.

After 4 1/2 hours, remove the apples from the crockpot and mash with a potato masher or place in a blender or food processor to purée until smooth.

If the color of the apple butter is not yet a rich, dark brown, put the mixture back into the crockpot and set to cook on “high” for another hour, uncovered and checking and stirring often.

Taste and add spices or flavoring as desired.

Remove from crockpot into container or jar and enjoy!

Pretty in….. Plaid?

I LOVE PLAID.

I also love flannel, but it’s too heavy of a fabric to sport in the Sunshine State 98% of the time.

If you are anything like me, you love plaid prints too, but have a rational fear of looking like a trendy lumberjack that just came out of aisle 6 at The Home Depot. A few tricks I use to combat such a nightmare include pairing the top with more feminine pieces and keeping at least one article of clothing a bit more form-fitting to keep from looking boxy and instead flattering my body. For instance, pairing a looser-fit top with some tighter jeans and/or heels or a pretty boot of some kind can really alter the whole dynamic of the look. Glamming your outfit up a little with some jewelry and accessories is another easy tactic to keeping you far from the “I’m looking for my misplaced axe…” look.

Plaid comes in so many patterns, color combinations and can be used on many different articles of clothing in all different seasons- there’s always something for everyone! Fall seems to be the prime time for plaid though, and with good reason; there’s a certain cozy, homey, warm feeling associated with plaid (at least in my humble opinion) that just pairs so perfectly with the Fall season.

I’ve linked just a few of my favorite things for this upcoming season- all numbers correspond to the numbered links and all of the looks are current to this season!

1 – 2 – 3 – 4 – 5 – 6 – 7 – 8 – 9

What are some of your favorite plaid looks? How do you style them throughout the seasons? I’d love for you to share!

Trending: Animal Print

This upcoming Fall season is throwing it back to the cringe-y pre-teen and teenage years of leopard print EVERYTHING and I’m kind of loving it.. the tactic that none of us awkward little queens had was learning how to style it properly.

Leopard print seems to be what is promoted the most out of all of the prints of the animal kingdom, and although it can be busy and a little tricky to work into your everyday attire, it can also be used as a great neutral. The trick is to blend it and keep your overall look sleek and clean.

The top I recently purchased is made by TopShop and I ordered it from Nordstrom and LOVE it! Due to the fact that it’s still summer I paired this top with some nice white jeans and neutral, taupe colored peep-toe booties and gold & silver mixed jewelry with a splash of emerald green for a subtle pop of color.

Like my top? You can find it here.

I’ve also linked some other great pieces below- either statement or just a little accessory like a scarf to add a little somethin’ to your outfit without going overboard- great if you’re not quite comfortable committing to an entire piece of clothing in animal print!

One thing I’ve been seeing a LOT of is pointed-toe mules. Surprisingly LOVING them, and really like this pair I found from Express. Would look super cute paired with skinny dark pants, black jeans, blue jeans, red or cranberry-colored pants.. so many options for these! Find this pair here.

If you’re not ready to go all out on a pointed-toe mule AND a crazy print, these Tory Burch patent leather Miller sandals are a fabulous option. I have a few pairs of these TB Miller sandals and adore them- dress ‘em up, dress ‘em down- they always look great and are super comfy! This leopard print pair is so pretty and though it may look a bit overwhelming, remember the only parts you will see are the straps once your foot is inside, so they can be paired with a ton of outfits without overpowering anything! Find these sandals here.

This clutch from Nordstrom’s BP line is cute, wallet-friendly, and an easy way to keep with the trends without going overboard. Find this clutch here.

The movie, “Pretty Woman” is actually the first thing that came to mind when I saw this skirt (…probably not a good thing) however, I think that when paired with the right sweater and pair of boots or booties, this skirt could be very well-done and flattering! Find this skirt here.

Scarves are always a great way to accessorize without going crazy on unique pieces or breaking the bank, and this scarf is no exception. This has the option of going with warmer tones or a cool grey/white combination that I also love- both from Banana Republic at a great price point! The print itself is somewhat muted, and I really love that about it, as you can use this for an easy accent piece to your ensemble OR a good neutral to work into an outfit. Find this scarf in both colors here.

This next sweater is a great and affordable option, again maybe for someone who wants to incorporate some animal print without really hopping on the commitment train. This grey sweater features a small printed area around the collar of the sweater and keeps the rest of the sweater simple and plain. You can find this sweater here.

As much as I love this sweater, I don’t love the price tag! You can find this beauty at Nordstrom but be warned- it will a $300+ dent in your bank account. Still linking it for those who just love it that much! Treat yo’self!

Lastly, this cardigan is a great piece. Long and reaching past the hips, but lightweight enough so it won’t bring you to the brink of heatstroke if you’re living in the South (I’m pretty sure we all just exist at that point anyways..). I found this at ViciCollection, a boutique I am really loving recently, and they have very affordable pieces! Check out this cardigan here.

Well, there you have it. I hope these pieces along with my own inspired y’all to find your inner glitter-blue-eyeshadow-wearing, leopard-print-obsessed, scrunchie-collecting (P.S.- those are coming back on trend too! Dying inside.) girly selves to give this animal print thing another go round.

Cheers to second chances with fashion!

Moving Forward

Lately I’ve found myself looking forward to my future from a different perspective. What do I mean by that? For the longest time, I’ve been supplementing my happiness with a career that will keep me financially stable and allow me the freedom to have flexibility with my spending and give me a sense of contribution to our home. Recently I have been heavily re-evaluating my career options specifically pertaining to my happiness: I have found I am really missing the feeling of fulfillment. Over the years I have felt like nothing more than a clinical robot, trying to find my niche and coming home with a half-empty heart and an aching lower back.

A recent opportunity in life has caused me to radically question and make necessary changes that will bring forth a positive outcome in my own soul’s happiness but also have the biggest positive impact on others. I am working hard to get through the muck and to the other side, and would appreciate your good vibes, thoughts and prayers throughout my little journey!

Following the theme of “looking ahead” in life, here’s some recent Summer-to-Fall looks I’ve put together for the upcoming months! I always look forward to the months of September through December, and this year is extra-special because I will be getting married to my better half during this time!

Links for each outfit will be provided under the photo sets- as a heads up, the majority of my outfit pieces from these looks can be found at Nordstrom.

3 Simple Ways to Find Your Fitness Motivation

We’ve all been there: falling into a slump where the motivation to go workout and be the healthiest kid on the block just vanishes. Gone. I’m there myself, currently in the worst shape I’ve been in in quite a while, but the important thing is that I don’t fall victim to it- and that goes for you too!

There are so many factors that can throw our daily lives off-kilter, and I’m here to tell you THAT’S OKAY. IN FACT, IT’S NORMAL. Maybe you’ve never been to a gym or done any kind of workout and are afraid to start. Any way you cut the cake, you’re feeling stagnant.

There are tons of motivating factors out there, but here are 3 methods I find quite useful for myself:

1. New Workout Clothes/Shoes!

I LOVE me some new gym threads. Even if you like to do at-home workouts, or run to the gym as soon as you roll out of bed, sometimes the new clothes just make you wanna look a little better in ‘em. (They’re also great for putzing around town in: “..oh, you’re asking if I just came from the gym? No, I’m here for the chips and queso and needed stretchy pants.”)

Some of my favorite brands include Alo Yoga, Lululemon, and Zella. However, any brand of any design will do, so long as YOU feel great wearing it!

2. Setting a Goal

This one is important to me. It is so easy to go into a robotic mode in my workout routine and not push myself hard enough in the gym or not have much structure with my diet, which in turn just makes me feel like I’m not making any progress- mostly because I’m not! Having a goal in mind and a reason to implement changes and push myself makes the whole process much more enjoyable. But remember, unless you are training to step up on a stage, be kind to yourself. If you fall off of the wagon, get right back on. It’s life, we all have one and every now and then ya gotta live a little.

3. Music

My gym playlist can literally make or break my workout. Though I usually go to the gym with my fiancé, we actually don’t work out together. I tend to prefer being on my own to get through my sets and really keep my focus. When I’m getting song after song that makes me dig deep and push myself, I feel so much more accomplished! There are times when I just cannot find a playlist or can’t get into a rhythm. Feel no shame for finding motivation in music or any other means- whatever works for YOU is the best you can do! Get yourself an amazing playlist that just makes you want to get up and put in some serious work.

Obviously there are many more motivational factors in my life, but these are 3 that I find have made an appearance and gotten me into a good headspace multiple times- tonight included. I finally had the desire to get back in the gym and kill it, and I am feeling more like my normal self again! Below are some photos from my workout to maybe help and motivate you.

What motivates you to get up and get moving? Share in a comment!

Cosmetic Procedures – Botox & Fillers!

Gone are the days of hiding our alterations, and arrived are the days of transparency and support!

Y’all don’t know how much I love that.

Let’s talk Botox and fillers.

Most have heard about them. Many are misinformed as well. Still some like to judge, casting the first judgement stone of being “fake”, heaven forbid you alter your appearance (haircuts, fake tans, makeup, piercings, hair dye, acrylic/gel/colored nails, weight loss, weight gain… are we seeing a pattern here?). These are meant to enhance your appearance, not deform you. Everyone has their own perception of beauty, but there is a way to achieve a very pretty, balanced and aesthetically pleasing result using these products. You don’t have to look like a float in the Macy’s Day Parade!

As a Registered Nurse with a pretty solid background in plastic surgery and cosmetic nursing as well as someone who has crossed over to the world of cosmetic injectables, I’m here to provide some real information based on my professional knowledge and experience.

BEFORE I PROCEED ANY FURTHER, PLEASE READ THIS NEXT STATEMENT:

PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE CONSULT WITH A LICENSED MEDICAL PROFESSIONAL WHO IS PROPERLY TRAINED AND CERTIFIED AND POSSESSES THE KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE TO RENDER BEAUTIFUL RESULTS WHILE KEEPING YOUR SAFETY A PRIORITY. INVEST IN YOURSELF: DO YOUR HOMEWORK, LOOK FOR BEFORE & AFTER PHOTOS, AND UNDERSTAND THAT CHEAPER IS NOT BETTER

Really, I’ve seen the ugly end of things. Take your time, do your research and don’t be afraid to ask questions. If products are significantly cheaper there is a good chance they are “cut” and you’re not getting the concentration you think you are.

So, let’s get into the Q & A:

What injectables have I tried?

Botox and fillers- specific fillers being Restylane Silk, Juvederm Ultra, and Volbella.

Let’s break it down: Botox helps reduce wrinkles or helps prevent new ones from forming by temporarily paralyzing muscle fibers to reduce the movement in your face. Does this mean you no longer have movement of your face? No. You can still have plenty of expression and look like a normal person. I’ll give you an example: I have very strong forehead muscles, and my face shows a ton of expression naturally. Over time, due to my anatomy and strong muscles, I have developed somewhat deep lines in between my eyebrows (from furrowing my brows) and along my forehead. Queue: Botox. Game changer. I still have expression, my eyebrows and eyelids have not dropped halfway down my face and I definitely don’t resemble a lifeless statue; to put it simply, my face still shows enough expression to get me into trouble even when I’m trying to keep my mouth shut (anyone else suffer from that?!). Since my muscles are partially paralyzed in the injected areas, they don’t move enough to cause the skin of my forehead and between my eyebrows to crease and fold as before, thus helping to reduce the appearance of the lines.

For the best information on Botox, click here.

Fillers help to plump up or “fill in” a specific area. These areas can be larger and smaller and include facial anatomy such as the cheeks, nose, lips, under eyes, fine lines, etc. There are many different fillers by different companies. The majority are temporary, however the length of “temporary” depends on a few factors such as your metabolism, the specific product, movement of the area into which the filler in injected, whether you have previous filler in the treated area, etc. Many contain HA (hyaluronic acid), which can be dissolved by your provider by another special injectable. This is quite convenient if you happen to be unhappy with your results or just want a change and decide you’d rather not have fillers anymore.

For the best information on dermal fillers, click here.

Where do I get what products injected?

I have Botox injected into my forehead and glabellar area (between the eye brows). I also have filler injected into my lips- currently I have Juvederm Ultra but in the past have also had Volbella and Restylane Silk in my lips. I tested Volbella when it was first introduced to our office and had it injected into my under-eye region. It made a difference but because I don’t have a lot of issues with that area of my face, I just let them dissolve over time and haven’t really revisited them.

What are my favorite products and why?

I love Botox but there is something quite similar called Dysport. I have not tried this other option so I don’t have much of an opinion on it; I can say that plenty of our patients use it and are just as happy.

As for fillers, I’m between Restylane Silk and Juvederm Ultra for my lips. I have been pretty consistent with Restylane Silk but this last round, I had Juvederm Ultra injected instead. Restylane Silk definitely seems to have the most plumping effect for me, but also induced the most post-procedure swelling for the first 24-36 hours. Juvederm Ultra still gives me a great plump, a bit smoother and definitely a less swollen appearance within that post-procedural window. Volbella was my least favorite simply because I didn’t achieve the plump and more aggressive aesthetic difference with this product. Don’t get me wrong- it’s a great product- I loved it for under my eyes and think it was very smooth and conservative, I just don’t prefer it for my lips. The swelling was minimal with Volbella as well.

Remember with swelling- it all depends on YOU. You can absolutely expect to be swollen and/or bruised for the first day or few days after receiving injections, but some products just induce more or less swelling than others and it can differ from person to person.

Do they hurt?

They’re not completely pain-free. Certain areas of the face are more sensitive than others. Botox seems to be the least uncomfortable, and even the under-eye area wasn’t bad at all. Lips on the other hand: not crazy about ’em. Luckily I only have them done 2-3 times a year, and when I do get them done my practitioner also has a topical Lidocaine cream available to apply 5-10 minutes beforehand which drastically reduces the discomfort!

Afterward, I may have a slight headache from the Botox. As for my lip fillers, they just feel a little tight or swollen for about 24 hours, but they never hurt.

How long do they last?

Speaking only from my personal experience, my Botox has lasted about 2-3 months before I need a touchup and my lip fillers have lasted about 6 months before I start noticing I need a little extra fluff back in there. When I began getting lip fillers, I would have them done once every 3-4 months but as I’ve achieved my desired size and volume and I’m sure as product has built up over the years since I never let them fully dissolve, I don’t go that often anymore.

How much do they cost?

It’s not cheap. If you find a place advertising cheap injectables, RUN. Far away. You can expect to pay between $11-15+ per unit of Botox, and fillers such as Restylane Silk are charged by the syringe. Restylane Silk ran about $500 and I believe Juvederm Ultra was about the same. It will be slightly different wherever you go, but many places offer consultations where you will be provided a quote on all of your treatment areas and products planned for those areas!

Are they really worth it?

That’s a very subjective question. My answer? ABSOLUTELY. I am 100% happy with my results and was able to give fully informed consent for my procedures; I did my research, I understood the risks and I knew I was in very knowledgable and SAFE hands.

Do you feel “fake” or plastic since you alter your appearance?

Nope. No more than I feel “fake” when I get my roots touched up at the hair salon (thanks Sandra!), get my nails done, or paint on my war-face for the day. I am the same girl I’ve always been, with a bit more confidence. To me that’s worth a lot.

——-

Did I answer all of your questions? I sure hope so, and if you’ve been wanting more information about cosmetic injectables, I hope this helped! At the end of the day, as I said before, it is so important to do your homework, consult with a skilled, trained and properly credentialed medical professional who uses only FDA approved products, and develop your own opinions based off of your experiences.

If you are in the Florida area, an absolutely wonderful office to visit is Fiala Aesthetics, located in Orlando. Even if you are not in the immediate area, they are worth the trip, and I still remain a patient from more than 2 hours away! Click here to learn more about Fiala Aesthetics.

If you have any questions please feel free to comment below or message me- I’d love to help!
